30 October, 2009 Over 550 people attended the Health & Wellbeing Event hosted by the National Dairy Council and Connacht Gold at the Castlecourt Hotel in Westport on Thursday evening 29th October. The event, which was the second of its kind in held by the two organisations in the region, was a huge success and saw experts give free advice to the public on looking and feeling great heading into the winter months. The event was free to the public and €3,700 was raised for local charity Western Care through raffle ticket sales.
The event opened with a complimentary food and wine reception before people sat down for the opening of the night’s proceedings. Paula Mee was first to take to the stage and the independent nutritionist, who many are familiar with from her appearances on RTE’s Afternoon Show, had some invaluable information for the crowd about the importance of dairy in our diets and highlighted the fact that, according to national food consumption surveys, 23% of women and 42% of teenage girls still don’t consume enough calcium, which can leave them at risk of related diseases like osteoporosis.
Local counsellor Fiona Hoban was next to the floor and her interaction with the crowd proved a huge hit as she encouraged people to think more about their mental approach to life and its challenges in a presentation entitled Healthy Mind Healthy Body: Healthy Body Health Mind. She discussed a number of pertinent topics including how our emotional needs relate to our physical and mental wellbeing.
The night finished with beauty demonstrations by from Petals Hair and Beauty, who also gave men a few tips on grooming before the raffle winners were called.
Speaking at the event, John Byrne, Connacht Gold’s National Sales Manager said, “We are absolutely delighted with the success of the event and pleased to be able to give something back to our customers and clients.
“This is the second Health and Wellbeing event Connacht Gold has held with the National Dairy Council. Over 480 people attended the last one in Sligo and given the numbers who have turned up here in Westport, I have no doubt that we will be organising something similar again next year. Hopefully people found it interesting and beneficial and will take some valuable information away with them from the presentations. We’re very lucky to have speakers of this calibre.”
“The National Dairy Council is committed to drawing on the expertise of nutritionists and evidence based scientific updates to help keep members of the public informed about the many benefits of dairy,” said Helen Brophy, Chief Executive of the National Dairy Council.
“The health and wellbeing evenings provide a wonderfully interactive way for us to look at dairy as part of a balanced diet and balanced lifestyle, while reminding us all that every small improvement can have big long term benefits to our health.”
