Glass Half Empty, or Half Full? Tralee Health & Wellbeing Event - Outlook can Affect Health & Wellbeing
Communications consultant & counsellor Fiona Hoban
Counsellor & Communications Consultant Fiona Hoban, is one of the specialists who will speak in Tralee's Health and Wellbeing evening on Thursday 6th October, organised by the National Dairy Council and Lee Strand Milk at the Ballyroe Heights Hotel.
Ms Hoban is renowned for engaging with audiences in an entertaining but thought provoking way and will share her expert guidance on life skills and stress management.
“Diet and exercise are critical to our health but our own personal happiness is an equally important part of our wellbeing, says Ms Hoban. “Many of us experience stress regularly during our lives. However, when we allow ourselves the space and opportunity to change how we feel and think, we are then in a position to make better life choices.”
“If we want to be as healthy and well as possible, we need to manage our emotional as well as our physical needs throughout our various life stages. If our emotional needs are not met in balanced ways, we can find ourselves stressed, anxious, depressed or even angry,” says Fiona.
Originally from Castlebar, Fiona Hoban runs a private counselling practice in Westport and is a part-time lecturer with the National Counselling Institute of Ireland. A graduate of Trinity College Dublin (MA Philosophy & Sociology), Fiona delivers Communications and Life Skills training to both public and private sector clients.
Paula Mee, one of Ireland's leading Irish independent dietitians, a TV personality and media commentator on nutrition and health, will also be speaking at the Health & Wellbeing evening in Tralee. Paula was a presenter of RTÉ TV’s Health Squad programme which ran for five years until 2006 and she makes regular appearances on TV and radio programmes advising on nutrition and health issues.
Paula will take the audience on an expert exploration and interpretation of scientific research related to milk and dairy products as part of our diet throughout our life-stages and look at some of the potential health benefits of the nutrients in dairy as part of a balanced diet.
"Many of us traditionally understand the relationship between dairy products and calcium - and benefits of this nutrient associated with dental health and bone health,” said Paula Mee. “However there is much more to dairy than calcium, with evidence from scientific studies indicating that dairy and the nutrients in dairy could also provide us with a variety of other important health benefits. For instance teenagers and young adults in particular are likely to be very interested in newer research which is pointing to the benefits of the nutrients in milk to people involved in sports and physical exercise."
Paula will explore the science behind dietary approaches to high blood pressure and she will review subjects including body weight and obesity, demonstrating the importance of milk and dairy when addressing such issues.
Mark Doe from 'Just Cooking' School, Firies, will be at the event demonstrating his creative culinary skills - and Deirdre Walsh from Radio Kerry will be master of ceremonies for the evening.
Dr Catherine Logan, Nutrition Manager from the National Dairy Council who is involved in organising the event in Tralee, says that those who attend can look forward to an enjoyable and informative evening. “This event gives people a chance to hear the latest updates about health and nutrition in a friendly environment; and to talk with qualified nutrition specialists,” said Dr. Logan. “We hope that this information meeting will have ‘something for everybody’, with encouraging tips about what small steps can make big differences to your health and wellbeing."
