Sweets and treats

As the amount, or actual quantity, of food that can be eaten by children at one meal/snack is limited, snacking is an important way for young children to meet their energy needs, but the type of snack chosen is also important.

Emphasis should be placed on including nutrient-rich snacks in the diet. Sweets and confectionery foods should be reserved for occasional treats and not eaten every day.

There are concerns about reactions to sugars in food. Although some parents report a change in behaviour when children take sugary drinks, scientific evidence in this area is very much inconclusive. However, sugary drinks should be limited as they can cause problems for young milk teeth if sipped over long periods, and have also been linked to obesity.
