Milk it!
Milk provides a unique nutrient package including protein, calcium and vitamin B12. It is recommended that children consume three servings of dairy per day, teenagers should increase this to five servings per day. A serving equates to 189 ml of milk, a carton of yogurt or 1oz or a match-box size piece of hard cheese. Therefore, milk is an essential part of a healthy diet whatever your age!
Dem bones need calcium
A baby is born with about 25g of calcium in their body, which increases to 1200g in adulthood. Ninety-nine per cent of the calcium is found in the bones and the teeth. So you can see why milk and dairy products (which are among the most important sources of calcium in the Irish diet) are needed for teeth and bones.
About 90 per cent of the adult skeleton is formed by the late teens. Additional bone may be laid down during the third decade of life. After a relatively stable period, bone loss may start to occur from the age of 45-50 years. This is why it is essential to take care of your bones during the growing and developing years.
