HEALTH & WELLBEING EVENING FOR DONEGAL
SPRING: TIME TO TAKE A FRESH LOOK AT YOUR OWN HEALTH
The National Dairy Council and Donegal Creameries are jointly organising a Health and Wellbeing evening on Thursday 25th March at the Mount Errigal Hotel, Letterkenny. The event is open to the public free of charge (doors open 7.30pm), with proceeds from a raffle on the evening going to Donegal Action for Cancer Care.“Most of us understand that exercise and a balanced diet are important – but Spring is a great time for us take a fresh look at our own health, what areas we may have let slip or what simple steps we can take that can make big improvements,” says Dr. Catherine Logan, Nutrition Manager with the National Dairy Council.
Reaching for the Wrong Shelves
Research tells us that 86% of Irish adults manage to consume at least 3 daily servings per day of food from the top ‘shelf’ of the food pyramid, which includes cakes, biscuits and confectionery. “These foods should be ‘difficult to reach’, to be consumed sparingly, because they are typically high in sugar and/or fats,” says Dr. Logan (Slan, Survey of Lifestyle, Attitudes & Nutrition 2007).
By contrast, the same survey reported that 61% of respondents consumed less than the ‘three servings of dairy a day’ recommended by the Irish Department of Health and Children within the food pyramid dietary guidelines. “These daily dietary guidelines are set at levels to help Irish people to achieve the recommended intake of essential nutrients which our bodies need,” says Dr. Logan.
“Developing healthy habits and sticking with them is the most effective way to take control of health and weight. There are no easy short cuts for anyone that really work and last,” says Dr. Logan.
Practical, Engaging and Up to Date Science-Based Information
“The Health & Wellbeing evening which will be organised in association with Donegal Creameries, is intended to provide up to date science-based information which is useful and practical, in an engaging way,” says Dr. Logan.
The Donegal Creameries & National Dairy Council evening will include a presentation on ‘Healthy Body and Healthy Mind’ by Counsellor & Communications Consultant Fiona Hoban. There will be discussion with Independent leading nutritionist Paula Mee and facial and make up demonstrations by Carmel Sheerin and Sylvia Sylvia from the Mount Errigal Hotel Beauty Salon.
Welcoming the announcement, Donegal Creameries CEO Ian Ireland said “Donegal Creameries are keen to highlight just how important it is for everybody’s nutritional benefit to consume milk on a daily basis. We hope that the people of Donegal can join us for what is sure to be an informative and enjoyable occasion, while also giving support to a local and worthwhile charity”.
