Thursday 2nd February 2012, is a date to keep free in your diary with personalities and specialists coming to the The Dome at Semple Stadium, Thurles, Co. Tipperary for an entertaining evening, which will also give you tips about your health, wellbeing and diet.

The National Dairy Council in association with Thurles Fresh Milk are organising the health and wellbeing evening. The night will raise much needed funds for Friends of the Community Hospital of the Assumption, Thurles.

Fran Curry from Tipp FM will be master of ceremonies for the evening. One of the specialists speaking will be Paula Mee, a leading Irish independent dietitian, TV personality and media commentator on nutrition and health. Paula was a presenter of RTÉ TV’s Health Squad programme which ran for five years until 2006 and she makes regular appearances on TV and radio programmes advising on nutrition and health issues.

Specialist Fiona Hoban, a popular Counsellor and Wellbeing Coach, is well known for engaging her audience with a presentation which has a track record for being very enjoyable. The evening will also include a cookery demonstration by Ailish Maher Hennessy of Fiacri Country House Restaurant and Cookery School.

No Lecturing or Hectoring

Dr Catherine Logan, Nutrition Manager from the National Dairy Council who is involved in organising the event in Thurles, says that those who attend can look forward to an enjoyable and informative evening.

“We know that Fiona Hoban has been very popular with audiences in other parts of the country,” says Dr. Logan. “Paula Mee is known for her easy presentation style. In fact Who's Who in Ireland described Paula Mee as someone who “doesn’t lecture or hector, instead her easy manner makes her advice so much easier to take.”
Paula Mee has been asked to address the subject of 'Dairy Throughout The Life-Stages.' At one end of the spectrum Paula will look at the importance of encouraging people to manage a balanced diet from the early years, highlighting the importance of having fun with food from childhood. However Paula will also take the audience on an expert exploration of the role of milk and dairy products as part of a balanced diet throughout the various life-stages.

Whilst certain nutrients within milk and dairy products are well known for their association with bone health - important during childhood and teenage years especially - teenagers and young adults in particular are likely to be very interested in newer research which is pointing to potential benefits of milk to people involved in sports and physical exercise.
Paula will review subjects including body weight and obesity, discussing the importance of nutritional quality of weight management regimes. The importance of nutrition in other health matters which arise throughout the various life-stages will also be addressed.

With Spring Approaching – The Time is Right

“With Spring approaching, this is a good time to take stock and take a fresh look at your own health,” says Dr. Catherine Logan, Nutrition Manager with the National Dairy Council.
“Too often we meet people who base their food choices and diet on mis-information or out-of-date information. This event gives people a chance to hear the latest updates about health and nutrition in a friendly environment; and to talk with qualified nutrition specialists,” said Dr. Logan.

“We hope that these information meetings will have ‘something for everybody’, with encouraging tips about what small steps can make big differences to your health and wellbeing,” said Dr Logan. She encourages anyone interested to pre-book their ticket if possible to avoid disappointment.

This is set to be an enjoyable and thought provoking evening. Tickets are available from Thurles Fresh Milk – ph: 0504 91900; The Hospital of the Assumption Thurles – ph: 0504 21055 or any Centenary Thurles Co-op branch.
